Feature: 15 Dos, Don'ts, Tips, and Tricks for Destination Spas
By Charli Penn
How does this sound for a honeymoon -- hot stone massages, foot rubs, aromatherapy? The Canyon Ranch properties have some of the most famous destination spas in the world. We sat down with Laura Hittleman, Canyon Ranch's director of beauty services (we know, sounds like a great job, huh?), to get the lowdown on what you should know before you go.
5 Destination Spa Dos:
1. DO Keep an open mind: "Take the opportunity to try new things. The best experts will be at your fingertips, so take advantage of that and go for, say, the Ashiatsu massage as opposed to the standard one."
2. DO Remember to slow down "With so many options to choose from, it's easy to jam-pack your day with activities. But don't forget to take time for yourself. Have some downtime and just breathe, take a nap, or read a book."
3. DO Take notes (even if they're only mental): "The goal of Canyon Ranch is to provide you with tools to live healthy once you return home, so take note of the lessons you learn and make the commitment to continue practicing these tips. Remember: The path to wellness is a journey."
4. DO Eat: "Canyon Ranch offers world-renowned, healthy gourmet cuisine, so be sure to sample the various options -- you may find out that you do like Brussels sprouts."
5. DO Try a new modality: "This is your opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and explore the full spectrum of integrated wellness. Try a shamanic journey, do something metaphysical, take the African dance class -- this is a safe place where no one will judge you."
5 Destination Spa Don'ts:
1. DON'T Wear tons of makeup: "Allow your skin a chance to breathe. You'll appreciate the connection to your natural self -- and the extra 10 minutes of sleep in the morning."
2. DON'T Ignore the change in climate: "Most often, a destination spa is located in a climate different than your own, so be aware of the weather and pack accordingly. There's no such thing as bad weather when you have the appropriate gear."
3. DON'T Be afraid to make the visit alone:
"Everyone at Canyon Ranch is looking to live healthier, and that communal goal guarantees you can make friends with just about anyone. In addition, Canyon Ranch provides multiple opportunities for you to interact with other single travelers."
4. DON'T Be inhibited:
"Allow this to be your escape and leave your hang-ups at home. Contribute to the positive nature of the ranch and encourage yourself, and those around you, to be receptive to new experiences."
5. DON'T Work too hard:
"Push yourself physically but not to the point of injury. You want to be able to enjoy yourself."
3 Things to Ask Before You Go:
1. Ask about the drink menu: "Canyon Ranch's destination spas are alcohol-free to allow for a more immersive experience. Be aware of what the policies are so there aren't any surprises when you ask for the drink menu."
2. Ask about cell phone policies: "Some places (such as Canyon Ranch) don't allow cell phones to be used in common areas. Some people can't live without their BlackBerry, so make sure you know in advance what areas are designated for mobile devices."
3. Ask about the dress code: "Find out what the dress code is (formal/casual) and what additional items you may need, such as hiking boots, rain gear, or running shoes. It's also helpful to know what amenities your resort provides and if there's an on-site store or boutique in case you forgot something."
2 Classic Destination Spa Myths Dispelled
1. It's not Fat Camp for adults: "It's a misconception [to say] that the main reason for visiting a destination spa is to lose weight and [that] all activities and food (or lack thereof) are centered around that goal. While losing weight may be a focus for some guests, the main theme at Canyon Ranch is to live healthier and longer. [This] incorporates a number of personal goals, like learning stress-reduction techniques and choosing healthier food options. We address each of those needs by teaching our guests tools to achieve overall wellness. If getting to a healthier weight is your priority, don't necessarily expect to walk away from your visit 10, even 5 pounds lighter."

2. You don't just have to do nothing: "To some, the idea of a destination spa includes lounging around with cucumber slices on your eyes (very Elizabeth Taylor). While pampering is definitely a part of the spa experience, activities have expanded to include fitness classes, cooking lessons, consults with a variety of modalities, outdoor adventures, and more."
