When New York City's historic Plaza Hotel recently re-opened after an extensive renovation, it unveiled a new shopping level filled with unique boutiques selling everything from bags and jewelry to high-end Austrian chocolate. Nestled among the shops is the only U.S. outpost of Krigler, the French fragrance and beauty brand whose history dates back to 1904. Over the last 100-plus years, the perfumer had created dozens of iconic scents that have been worn by everyone from 1920s jazz musicians to European royalty. Sparkling Diamond 22—created in 1922—made headlines at the time as one of the most expensive perfumes in the world, thanks to the diamond that was dropped into every bottle. (Today's version features Swarovski crystals instead.) Created in 1912, the almond, rose and cypress concoction Chateau Krigler was presented to Grace Kelly when she arrived in Monaco, while Manhattan Rose 44 mixes both French and American roses. At the Plaza shop, you can find all those classic scents, as well as the next generation of Krigler goods like candles, soaps and—just launched this summer—bath products and skin care that all price in at under $50. For the body, standouts include Dazzling Oil, a moisturizing oil infused with the Manhattan Rose 44 scent; Rich Micro Scrub body polish to slough off tired skin; and Madison Secret, a thick body lotion with sweet almond oil and shea butter. For the face, there's the Aloha Divine cleanser and Sublime Star, a calming cream for sensitive skin. As befits the company's history, most of the products are generously fragranced and boast a rich, luxurious texture that harkens back to a time when the perfume you wore was as important as the fashions you sported—and when those in the know would head to Krigler for their signature scents.
