As any experienced beauty junkie knows, when trying out a new skin care product or treatment, it can often take weeks—if not months—to see a noticeable difference (assuming the product actually works, of course). So when I first tested out the new NuFACE device—a handheld, at-home microcurrent machine that promises to lift, tone and revitalize skin—I did the recommended five minute session and went on with my day, not expecting much of anything. But then the comments started: "You look so rested," a couple people said, while a few others asked if I had just had a facial. "You're glowing," was another popular one. All day long it went on—from people who had no idea what NuFACE was, much less that I had tried it. So naturally, I had to give the device a closer look.

Based on the same technology used in professional spa-grade microcurrent facials, FDA-approved NuFACE is a non-invasive device that aims to advance muscle tone in the face, improve circulation and plump up the skin through the use of gentle alternative currents. (Different from galvanic currents, microcurrents help increase collagen and elastin production, as well as stimulate the muscles.) Users just slather on some of the enclosed Derma-Gel and hydrate with Optimizing Mist (two basic solutions that help with conductivity), then run the two-pronged device up over targeted parts of the face, making sure to go over each area a couple of times and holding for five seconds on any trouble spots; doing all the recommended areas—including the sides of the neck, the chin and cheeks and the forehead—takes less than 10 minutes. (The device should not be used under the eyes or on the middle of the throat.) Aside from a very light prickly sensation, there's no feeling to the treatment, but the results are noticeable almost immediately: When just half the face is done, you can see a visible difference in tone, lift and brightness on the treated side.

When used regularly over time, NuFACE will also help minimize spots and pigmentation, aid in exfoliation and improve the penetration of your skin care products (and it's also safe for use by people with roseacea and acne, and those who've had plastic surgery or used injectables). In a third-party study, subjects who used NuFACE for five minutes a day over the course of one month saw a 67% reduction in fine lines in wrinkles, a 13% reduction in sagging skin and a 31% reduction in surface irregularities and rough patches. Which is basically just science's way of saying what I clearly learned the first day I used this: it works.

The NuFACE Kit (including the device, Derma-Gel, Optimizing Mist, instructional DVD, one-year warranty and 30-day money-back guarantee) retails for $325 at select Dillard's, Lord & Taylor and Nordstrom stores, and at over 200 spas nationwide. Visit myNuFACE.com for more information.
